KATAHDIN 2004 SPECIALTY SHOW REPORT: My special thanks this year to Peg Gagnon who was our show chairman for the December event, and who did a great job. Our 2004 Specialty Show was blessed with balmy weather and a lovely entry of 56, which is the highest of the past several years. This year's show also had an exceptionally large entry of solid liver Shorthairs, which is always nice to see in the show ring, and as usual, we drew dogs from all over the East and as far West as Colorado. When you read the home towns of the winners below, you get a feel for what an event this is, and our appreciation for people who travel so far to be with us.
Club member Kevin Flynn did us the honor of judging Sweepstakes. His Best in Puppy Sweeps was Claddagh's Knight to Remember (solid liver) bred and owned by Cathy Iocopelli of Long Island, NY. Best of Opposite Sex in Sweeps went to Robaron Tea Time at the Ritz bred and owned by Bob and Beth Ritchie, early members of Katahdin, now living in Powhatan, Virginia.
Best in Veteran Sweeps was Ch. Mariah's Diamonds R' Forever SH bred and owned by club members Sandra Kretz and Ann Michaud. This was Daisy's second year as Best Veteran.
Renowned all-breed judge Mrs. James Edward Clark was our judge for the regular classes. She chose Ch. Kan Points VJK Autumn Roses owned by Linda and Richard Stark of Colorado as Best of Breed. Carlee is the #1 Shorthair in the country for 2004, and this was her second year as our Best of Breed winner. She went on to take First in the Sporting Group later in the day. Best of Opposite Sex was Ch. Stelor's Final Decision, owned by Dee Stelmach and Nancy Campbell of CT. Mariah BDN Meant to Be, bred and owned by Sandra Kretz and Ann Michaud was Winner's Dog for 4 points. Reserve Winners Dog and Best Puppy was Honeybriar's Dark Vader (solid liver) owned by Charlie Mahoney and Brenda Rhodes of West Virginia. Winner's Bitch was Shomberg's Pawnee Love Song (solid liver) owned by John and Bev Hoover of PA. Reserve Winners Bitch was Sunrise Jamakin Me Crazy owned by club members Lori Crain and Samantha Honaker of NY.
As always, club events are "made" by the club members who so generously give of their time and effort. Through the efforts of our super raffle-eers, Pauline and Steve Marcq, our raffle raised $251.00 for the club and sent participants away with wonderful goodies just in time for the holidays. Our very special thanks go also to our club President Tom Dwyer who had been up since 3:00 am fighting a fire in Brookline, NH, before getting dressed and driving to Boston to take photos and hand out trophies at the show. Also thanks to our other club officers Jeremy Thompson and Alison Jones, and to Tom White, who not only made our beautiful trophies, but was there to help present them. And finally to all of our members who supported this event with hospitality, helped move crates and did so many other things. We always have a wonderful spirit at our show, and that is a reflection of our members who do so much
NEXT SHOW EVENT
One of the objectives of our show program is to try to encourage
large entries at local shows which help members finish their dogs'
championships which require major level points. Our next event will
be a supported entry show at the Champlain Valley KC on Saturday,
July 17. This is part of a three day weekend at the fairgrounds in
Essex Junction, VT. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more
details.

Short Story by a Katahdin Member
I love my woodstove, cheery and bright
Keeps us warm through the cold winter night
A nest of Shorthairs, all toasty and warm
Curled up in front; they'll stay 'till morn
J, and Woo, and her pups Casco and Mr. B
Their lives are good, "the way it should be"
We brought the pups gently into our world
And now they toast, contentedly curled
Their lives are so short; they give us their all
How much time left, 'till that "last call"?
We held you at the beginning, we'll hold you at the end
When the needle slips in, my trusted friends
Twitching and sighing, though sound asleep
They never complain, not even a peep
Belly to back, they spoon like lovers
I'm cold and jealous, shivering under covers
Will I tear their cozy nest asunder?
How this ends, you needn't wonder!!!
What adventures await us, I don't yet know
But tonite we sleep, nose to toe
Sweet dreams, little ones

The Katahdin GSP Club will once again provide a plaque at no charge (if you don't have one already) for your GSP's who earned a title in 2004. Or a plate to add on to your existing one. Did you have a new Junior, Senior or Master Hunter this past year? A CD, or CDX? Therapy Dog? Agility titles, or a NAVHDA title? Please supply me with the dog's AKC name, call name, what title was earned, date earned. Tell me if you need the entire plaque, or just the add-on plate for an existing plaque. If you can get this info to me by Feb 24th, I will have the completed plaques with me at the next membership meeting, or I will mail them to you. Please email the info to me at spmarcq@aol.com, and please reference KGSPC in the title bar. Thanks!
