Club Championship: Our annual Club Championship is scheduled for August 28, at Sharp's Farm in Hopkinton NH. Competition in field, conformation and water work too! See details/entry form elsewhere in this newsletter. Please contact Deb Broad with any questions, or if you can volunteer to help that day she will definitely put you to work!!
Fall Hunt Test: Preparations are well under way for the Katahdin fall Hunt Tests November 13 & 14, at Sharp's Farm. Yeah, it's November, and yes, it may be a bit chilly, but hey! We don't care about no stinkin' cold, do we? We're shorthair people, aren't we? C'mon, people - it's guns, dogs, birds and hot chocolate!!! At least it won't be too hot! Actually, it is the weekend after the TarTan club tests, and we are hoping for a really good entry. We are looking for all the help we can get, including marshals, hamburger-cookers, bird planters, gunners, stewards, and dancing girls. OK, maybe not the dancing girls. Please contact Steve Marcq if you can help in any area; God knows I can use it. Thanks!
Specialty Show:
Dear Members of the Katahdin Club,
Well, it's that time of year again for Ye Olde Show Chairman to solicit pledges to cover the cost of trophies at our Specialty Show to be held in Boston on December 5. That may sound like a long way off, but AKC paperwork has to be in long in advance for us to be approved and listed in the AKC Calendar of Events which makes us official.
I think many of you know that covering the cost of trophies and the income from our highly successful raffle are the most important factors in having this Club event come out on the black side of the ledger.
I hope members will be as generous as you have been in the past. Our trophies are truly outstanding -- hand thrown porcelain pieces made by our own Club Vice President and Master Potter, Tom White.
I do not need any money now, only pledges to be collected by the date of the show in December. Pledges to cover the trophies for a class are $25, Sweepstakes are $30 and $35, Best Puppy is $35, and the Winners and Best of Breed range between $40 and $50.
I would also invite you to mark your calendars for December 5 and plan to join members of the Club and exhibitors from all over the country at these huge shows in Boston. This is our Club's highest profile event and always a source of pride to the Club -- and a lot of fun.
Thanks again for your support in the past. If you have any questions, please drop me a note.

Miscellaneous:
Dear Fellow Dog
Lover:
We are writing to update you about AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day.
With nearly 300 events confirmed this September, we are looking
forward to an extremely successful 2nd annual event.
Both the New York City and Raleigh, NC AKC offices are well into planning their own events on Saturday, September 18th. These celebrations will include Canine Good Citizen testing, micro chipping, canine health information, various canine demonstrations and many more entertaining and educational activities. There are opportunities for clubs in these areas to participate in these events, so if you are near either location, let us know.
If you would like to hold your own event and have not already confirmed this with us, we'd like to remind you that August 2 is the deadline to do so in order to receive a kit of promotional and educational materials (brochures, posters, buttons, pencils, etc) from us. If you're looking for ideas and inspiration, please visit the following link:
http://www.akc.org/dic/clubs/rdo/index.cfm.
You can also click on "event search" in the upper right hand corner of this web page to search for events in your state. Your event will be listed here if you submit a response form (found at the aforementioned link) by August 2.
We look forward to hearing from you and hope to see you in September --whether out hosting an event or attending one!
Regards,
The AKC Communications team!

(from Sandra Kretz) I just wanted to advertise to the local Shorthair world that I have taken back a 10 month old puppy bitch from my breeding of Spiff (Ch. Mariah's Diamonds in the Wind MH) and Frank (Ch. Crystal's Opening Day SH) due to illness in her family. She is a very sunny dispositioned, moderate sized, dark ticked and patched girl with a pencil blaze. She was raised with a 3 year old and an elderly Lab, and gets along well with children and other dogs. She has been through Puppy I and II at Tails U Win, a reputable positive-only training center in CT, and is VERY smart. She is also trained on, and very reliable on, Invisible Fence. She is very, very keen on retrieving (life with a Lab can do that to you) and would make an excellent companion for a tennis player who misses lots of balls, a fly ball competitor or a 10 year old. I have started her on birds, and she would make a very credible hunting dog (as you might expect from her parentage). She is a very sound, pretty bitch, but I am not seeking a show home for her. More important is a home where they will have time to keep her intellectually challenged. I will be showing her at the Nutmeg Specialty next weekend, if any potential owners are interested in seeing her.
