2006 Awards!

Once again, the Katahdin GSP Club will be providing wicked awesome plaques and/or brass tags (if you have a plaque from a previous year) at no charge to club members. I will need the following information from you:

· The title won in 2006; i.e AKC Senior Hunter, AKC Champion, NAVHDA Prize 1 112 pts, etc. along with the date earned .
· Whether or not you already have a plaque for the dog. If you do, you need only the add-on tag. If you don't, I will make a plaque for you and will need the dog's full name for the headplate. So, tag only or plaque and tag(s) !
If you need only the add-on tags, I will add them to your existing plaque for you (can be a bit fussy, teeny screws and all that) if you want. Let me know if you want this and I will arrange with you to do so, at the annual meeting or whenever, or I can mail them to you. Please email me the required info at spmarcq@comcast.net.
The deadline for me to receive the info from you is  February 26th  in order to get them made in time for the annual meeting.

Thanks!
Steve Marcq

 Hello All,
We recently had our first real snow of the season. Finally! My dogs, all four of them, ran gleefully out into the new snow the next morning and played like a bunch of children – chasing each other, jumping over the mounds created by the plow and putting their noses in it like shovels, creating strange little pathways. It warmed my heart. Yet another reason to love the GSP – they are all purpose, all weather dogs with a true sense of joy.
Now that we've finished another successful showing at the Eastern Dog Show in Boston , you might think that it is time to rest up for Spring activities. Well, that is true, but there is a lot of planning that is going on behind the scenes in order to bring these events to you. The paperwork is already into the AKC for our Spring Hunt Tests on April 28 th and 29 th. . We are proud to have Blue Seal Feeds sponsor the
tests. They will be in attendance to showcase their various products. I use the food for my dogs and am very pleased with it.
Keep checking our website, for we are discussing opportunities for matches and other shows this Spring and will post the information as soon as it is confirmed. These activities create lots of opportunities for people to volunteer and learn what they are all about – whether it is a field event or a show.
My Sweet Georgia Brown is expecting a litter in mid-March, so I know what I will be consumed with – puppies, puppies, puppies. I can't wait.
Our next meeting will be the Annual Meeting at Pauline and Steve's home on April 1 st . I hope you plan on attending – bring a pot luck dish, good cheer and prepare to enjoy yourself.

Keep warm!
Pat

Minutes of Meeting
January 28, 2007

A meeting of the Club was held on January 28, 2007 at the home of Kim Leeman. The meeting commenced at 1:00 PM. In attendance were: Steve Marcq, Tom Dwyer, Kim Leeman, Deb Broad, Tal Allen, Sandra Kretz and Pat Russell.

President's Report:

The President reported on another successful and fun show in Boston . We made $78 in sales of our new t-shirts and sweatshirts. Many thanks to Deb, Sandra and all who contributed to the success of the show. Pat also reported that Blue Seal Feeds has agreed to sponsor our Spring Hunt Test. We greatly appreciate their sponsorship and hope that they will get good interest in their products.

Secretary's Report:

The Acting Secretary reported that Maine has defined a Breeding Kennel as “a location where 5 or more adult dogs, wolf hybrids or cats capable of breeding are kept and some or all of the offspring are offered for sale, sold, or exchanged for value.” If people meet these minimum requirements they must be licensed as a State Breeding Kennel. The members present voted against advertising in the National Event Catalog. Sandra was elected our delegate to the National in Kentucky . Finally, the Acting Secretary reported on the 2007 Pointing Breed Hunting Test Advisory Committee, which has been formed by the AKC. The GSP representative is Pamela Brann. Club members are beginning to send in their renewal dues.

Treasurer's Report:

The Treasurer reported on the Club balance, which is in line with past years. Proceeds from the Eastern Dog Show have not yet been received.

Election of New Members:

We are pleased to have received applications from John Manni and Lynn Milewski. John lives in Tewksbury , MA and Lynn lives in Hirem , ME. Both have had Shorthairs for many years.

Show Committee Report:

Different venues for events were discussed, as well as advertising those events in some of the free newsletters that are available. It was suggested also that we put Katahdin's 2007 schedule in them to hopefully attract more participants. It was proposed and agreed that we would sponsor a fun match with the Granite State GSPC. Deb would like a committee for Show events – if anyone is interested, please let her know.

Training Days:

Training days are on hold for the winter.

Club Championship:

Discussion tabled until next meeting.

Hunt Test Committee:

Tom reported that the judging panel has been approved for the Spring Hunt test, April 28 and 29, and all the paperwork is in. Steve will be working on the premium. Pat, the Hunt Test Secretary, will check that we have enough ribbons and order more if necessary. We are looking for volunteers for the event to Marshall , plant birds and whatever else needs to be done. Steve reported that HELDCA requires a having a NH Training license for dogs before you can let your dog run the field after a Hunt Test.

Team Shoot:

The Team Shoot will be May 12 th .

Website:

The domain was renewed for another year. Thanks Kim!

Old Business:

  • Sandra volunteered to act as newsletter editor, but it was agreed that Kim would do the next one and hopefully someone else will agree to take it on at the annual meeting.

New Business:

  • Pursuant to the club's by-laws, the positions of Vice President and Secretary will be open at the Annual Meeting. A Nominating Committee was formed consisting of Sandra, Tal and Steve to consider candidates. Please let Steve know of the dog's titles your dog gained this year so he can make his wonderful plaques.

The next meeting is the Annual Meeting and will be held at Steve and Pauline Marcq's home at 2 PM on Sunday, April 1 , 2007. It will be pot luck, so think of something yummy to bring.

Pat wanted to have it at her house, but decided against it since she will have brand new puppies.

Respectfully submitted,
Pat Russell, Acting Secretary

ADDENDUM:

The President has received a resignation from Clark Wamsley from the position of Secretary. It was accepted with regret. Pat will act as Secretary until the Annual Meeting at which point the position comes up for election.

Brags:

From Deb Broad

At one of our club fall hunt test, triple Luke granddaughter “Kiara” Bear Mtn Gingersnap Cookie, owned/handled by Jeff Phillips and out of Bear Mountains Froz'n Image (owned by Tal), got her first qualifying score toward her junior title at 8 months old. Kiara was our club championship puppy winner at 6 months old and had a very successful hunting season at seven months old. Way to go Jeff!

Two Luke grandsons were also in the ribbons on the same day. “Spencer” Bear Mt Blue Ridge Eclipse, topping the score card with his mom Barbara Desjardins (great job Barb!) and “Boomer” Bear Mt Blue Ridge Illusion, with yours truly, making his debut', expertly trained and loved by Craig Wojcieszak. These two boys are out of our 2005 Club Champion, Ch Wildapples Griffin,JH and Ch. Bear Mt Blue Ridge Paradox, “Kerry”.

This picture is a tribute to the memory of my boy “Luke” A/C Ch Longacres Blue Ridge Walker, TT, CGC, showing the four generations that followed is his pawprints. From left to right is, his daughter “Lenah” A/C Ch Bear Mts Sierra High Country, JH, TT, CGC, TDI at 16 years old (still with us as we type this), Lenah's great granddaughter “LucyLu” Bear Mt Sierra High Definition at 10 months old, Lenah's granddaughter “LuLu” Ch Bear Mtn Sierra Hi-Resolution, JH at 6 years old, and Lenah's daughter “Glamor” A/C Ch Bear Mt Sierra Hi-Fashion at 11 years old. Not only did my Luke give me so much joy for 14 ½ years being my buddy, showdog, personal gundog, and bed hog, I consider myself so darn lucky to have the opportunity to have, after his passing, four living generations. The clock was ticking and I had the dream of getting this view on film. The person who helped me permanently preserve this wonderful opportunity is our very own club photographer and friend, Tal Allen. His patience, skill and knowledge turned four wiggling, happy, running “every which way but loose” GSP's into a picture to cherish forever. This is only one of the many beautiful moments he captured on film for me that day, as well as at many of our events. I urge everyone to take the same opportunity in using Tal's “Gift” to preserve those moments with your furkids, that you also will always cherish. You will be glad you did. I wish Tal were around many years ago to take snapshots, but now won't miss the opportunity to do it again and again. Thank You Tal!!!

(I must also thank the kennels and stud dogs who also helped in making these four furkids possible……….Coach Roads for Lenah's mom, Ch Longacres Centurion – Glamors dad, 2x Nat'l SS Ch Prairiestars Maverick – Lulu's dad and Ch Richtofens Mark of Weinland – LucyLu's dad. )

Tal's next group in spring………..Champion Kerry (Luke daughter) with her kids that are either show pointed and/or going to be hunt titled. Freeze, Flash, Image, Boomer, Spencer, Ivy, Abby and Daisy. Okay Tal, lets get them all in one picture (LOL). He will do it, I know he will……………….He has the patience of a saint!
