Cover Shot - AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Event
Happy Autumn!
The days are getting shorter and cooler – for many of us that is good news, because it signals Hunting Season and a chance to let our dogs do what they love to do. It also means that club events are winding down – just the upcoming December Specialty Show left to close out our year in style.
We had another fun-filled Club Championship in August – thank you Deb for doing all the hard work. Congratulations to all our winners, and especially to Suzi Moore and Quint, who won the Championship level.

Pauline and Steve Marcq and Bethel who won the Intermediate level.

and Jeff Phillips and Kiara who won the Puppy level.

This is a really fun event and a great way to get to know your fellow club members. Tal took some wonderful pictures, which you can find on his website http://tallenllc.com/events/tallen_eventlist.html
The September Hunt Test was well attended – over 60 entries for the two days – same as the Spring test. Some new faces, both human and canine, which is great. We were lucky with our weather and weren't greeted by a rainstorm, as were the hunt test participants the following weekend. Thank you Tommy for serving as Event Chair. Thank you to all the volunteers who gunned, marshaled and generally kept the test on track. Thank you Pauline for your top notch kitchen – we have the best food around! Thank you Kim for our Responsible Dog Ownership display, and Suzanne and Linda for helping her.

Kim put up two big white tents and her students contributed some very talented artwork.
A big congratulations to our longtime member, Ken Marden, who will receive the AKC Lifetime Achievement Award in the Performance division at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in Long Beach in December. Ken was a Director on the AKC board from 1986-2006. In 1987 he was elected President of the AKC and established the Performance Events Department. He was instrumental in building Katahdin into the well rounded club it is today.
We are gearing up for the December Specialty Show in Boston . Sandra and Deb have gotten everything organized and Tom White is working on his handsome trophies. Even if you aren't entering a dog I hope you will attend – there are great exhibits, good food and of course, dogs, dogs, dogs.
Happy Holidays and I hope to see many of you in Boston !
Pat
A meeting of the Katahdin German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Greater Portland was held on Sunday, September 24, 2006 at the home of Tom Dwyer. In attendance were Pat Russell, Tom Dwyer, Steve Marcq, Kim Leeman, Peg Gagnon, Lou Gagnon and Clark Wamsley. The meeting commenced at 4:15 PM .
President's Report:
The minutes were accepted as printed in the last newsletter. Pat reported on a conversation she had with Jack Schneider, one of the founding members of the club. He has seen many other GSP clubs and feels that our club really does a good job. It was great to hear. The President commented on the successful Hunt Tests held that were just finished. We had over 60 dogs entered. Kim Leeman did a spectacular job with her Responsible Dog Ownership Day tent and exhibit. The AKC is proposing that clubs appoint a Legislative Liaison. The members present agreed that it would be a nice thing to do, but unless someone volunteers, we will pass on it for now. However, that sparked a discussion of docked or undocked tails. As a club, we welcome all shorthair tails, length of coats, etc. Finally, we have heard that our Newsletter Editor will be remaining in Florida , so Kim stepped in to act as Newsletter Editor.
Secretary's Report:
The Secretary didn't have anything to report.
Treasurer's Report:
The Treasurer reported that we made a decent profit on the Fall Hunt Tests.
Election of New Members:
Jeff Phillips, Jeff Pacheco, Suzanne Wong and Robert Zuk were ratified as new members. Linda Msicsz and Paul Tibbets were presented for membership.
Show Committee:
Everything is on track for the December show in Boston . We had a successful GSP Specialty Match held in Wolfeboro June 11th along with Carroll County Kennel Club.

I want to thank everyone that came to help out, those who exhibited, and to the support from the new Granite State GSP Club, making it another fun time for GSP owners. The more, the merrier! We had a lot of great comments on our judge and he also commented on the quality of all our dogs. Everyone did a fabulous job at handling their dogs! You all looked Marvelous!
There was a nice raffle, munchies, beverages, prizes and a lot of great conversations. Carroll County Kennel Club was very pleased with the outcome and has invited us to return next June and also would like to work with us in having a supported entry at their September 2007 shows. Hope to see you all next year!
Then on to the Club Championship in August which was another great day together. Again, many thanks to those who always make our events so successful and fun!

BRAGS:
From Deb Broad
At the Club Championship in August, “Lulu” Ch. Bear Mtn Sierra Hi-Resolution (JH) (2xNSS CH Prairiestars Maverick X A/C Ch Bear Mt Sierra Hi-Fashion) took 2nd place in the Intermediate class. She also finished her Junior Hunter title (four for four) at our Club test in September with some awesome scores. I moved her up on the second day to Senior level. Whenever she saw those “pterodactyls” we keep in that back field, her eyes got as big as golfballs! Her excitement was overwhelming. She really wants to do THAT again!
Also in September, Lu took Best of Opposite at the Carroll County Kennel Club show along with “Flashy Girl” Bear Mt Still Flash Frozen ( A/C Ch Longacres Blue Ridge Walker, TT, CGC X Ch Bear Mt Blue Ridge Paradox) as Winners Bitch. Flash is our creamsicle puppy (she's ticked) out of the fudgsicle puppy (frozen) liver litter. (Flash is Mr Freeze's sister).
Their ½ sister “Minka” Bear Mtn Blueridg's Mystique (JH), also earned her last leg for her Junior Hunter title at our club test. She is by A/C Ch Longacres Blue Ridge Walker, TT, CGC “Luke” out of Longacres Fanfair.
A double Luke granddaughter “Kiara” Bear Mtn Gingersnap Cookie, made her début at our club championship by going Best Puppy Champion at 6 months old owned by Jeff Phillips and I. Her first outing on wild birds opening day of season was very successful. I hear she was steady on wing and shot! Great training Dad!!!
A meeting of the Club was held on November 5, 2006 at the home of Pauline and Steve Marcq. The meeting commenced at 4:25 PM . In attendance were: Pauline and Steve Marcq, Tom Dwyer, Kim Leeman, Deb Broad and Pat Russell.
President's Report:
The President reported that longtime member Ken Marden was being honored by the AKC with a lifetime achievement award. Ken was instrumental in getting the club to where it is today. She commented that this has been a good year for the club – new, participating members and good events.
Secretary's Report:
The Secretary was unable to attend, so the report was tabled.
Treasurer's Report:
The Treasurer reported on the Club balance, which is in line with past years. The Insurance bill was just paid for the coming year.
Election of New Members:
Paul Tibbets and Linda Msicsz were ratified as new members. Welcome Linda and Paul! No new applications were received.
Show Committee:
Deb received the premium package for the Eastern Dog Show and has sent it back. Pauline and Steve will be running the raffle again. Donations are most welcome. Sandra will be doing Hospitality and supplying Lasagna. Members who are attending are asked to bring other dishes to round out the food – if they can. Entries for the show close on November 22nd.
The Sporting Dog Association is having a March show in Fitchburg . The club decided that it would be a good venue for us to sponsor an event. Deb was going to find out if altered dogs could enter the Veteran's Sweeps. (The answer is yes, they can).
We will also be doing a supported entry in North Conway this coming year.
Training Days:
Training days are on hold due to hunting season. There is great interest in resuming them early next year.
Club Championship:
Deb will be chairing it again next year – thanks Deb!
Hunt Test Committee:
Tom volunteered to Chair the Spring Hunt Test, and Pat volunteered to act as Secretary. Steve will take care of the Premium. Tom will start looking for a bird commitment.
Website:
The website is fabulous.
Old Business:
T-shirts and sweatshirts have been ordered and will be ready for the December show.
New Business:
Kim will act as the interim newsletter editor. We will be looking for a new editor in March at the Annual Meeting.
The cost of mailing newsletters is high. For new members and then renewing members, we will put on the application that the newsletter will be sent by email unless you check a box.
Steve goes on December 13th to draw dates for our 2007 Hunt Tests.
Brags:
From Lou and Peg Gagnon: Coach Roads Wildapple Briar earned a 4th leg towards his senior hunt title. He has qualified 4 out of 5 times. He is out of our Coach Roads Jewel Rules SH and Jeremy and Sandy 's CH. Wildapple's Griffin JH.
Also, Briar's littermate Coach Roads Wildapple Ivy was Winners Bitch at the Fitchburg show on Sunday Nov. 12.
Will be at Kim Leeman's house on Sunday, January 28th at 1:00 PM . E-mail Northerncrosskim@aol.com

The meeting was adjourned at 6:15 PM .
Respectfully submitted,
