 KATAHDIN GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER CLUB OF GREATER PORTLAND MEMBERS' CODE OF ETHICS

In order to promote the highest of ideals among German Shorthaired Pointer owners and breeders and to aim for the continuous improvement of the breed within the framework of the American Kennel Club standards, I pledge:

1. To follow the rules of good sportsmanship in all dog show competitions and activities and adhere to accepted practices for the humane treatment of all dogs.

2. To attempt to help and befriend novice exhibitors, handlers and breeders.

3. To maintain the best of standards of health and care in my kennels.

4. To keep well informed in the field of genetics and work persistently to eliminate hereditary defects from the German Shorthaired Pointer breed.

5. To fully explain to all prospective purchasers the disadvantages as well as the advantages of owning a German Shorthaired Pointer. Also, to educate all buyers on the importance of spaying and neutering of pets and to require all dogs sold solely as pets to be spayed or neutered and/or sold with AKC non-breeding papers.

6. To refuse to sell to wholesalers or retailers, nor to sell to any buyer where I have reason to believe that the puppy or dog will not be carefully cared for. Also, I will include in all breeding contracts an agreement to be signed by the owner of the bitch/stud that no puppies resulting from the breeding will be wholesaled or sold to pet shops.

7. To keep and to pass on to buyers of puppies or adult dogs accurate health, breeding, registration and pedigree records. Papers may be withheld or breeders rights retained only by mutual agreement in writing.

8. To stand by the puppies or dogs that I sell by agreeing to take back or help to place any dog that a purchaser may have to give up for whatever reason.

9. To not breed a dog that is not O.F.A. certified or has not had its hips cleared by a licensed veterinary radiology institution.

10. That at the time of breeding my stud, an exchange of pedigrees must be made along with a written stud service contract with a signed copy going to each party. In addition, keeping the breed standards clearly in mind, refuse stud service to any bitch I consider of poor quality, poor temperament or in poor health; that would not be in the best interest of the German Shorthaired Pointer breed. If I deny stud services, I will fully explain my reasons to the owner of the bitch.

I understand that a violation of the above, or not adhering to the Club's Constitution and By-Laws, or a suspension of my privileges by the AKC will result in my suspension or expulsion from the Katahdin German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Greater Portland.
